From the first class cabin to the attention of the staff and wonderful food to the stops and treks along the way to visit the boat people, the hidden caves and viewing the incredible bay- this is something you will never forget. Every detail is overseen with care and eloquence. The one drawback was the long drive from Hanoi, yet this drive was soon forgotten when we entered the small junk that runs with only a small group of 10 or so people. Transfers were efficient and did not take long. We really felt that our safety and happiness were attended to by competent and knowledgeable people. In our case, we had heard that a small junk had sunk with 12 occupants only 10 days before; however, all water vessels sailing in the bay had been immediately checked and not allowed to sail until they were deemed safe. The vistas along the bay and our entire sails with the Valentine Company will long be remembered.

Sunset at Halong Bay, Vietnam

Sitting here in my flat in Berlin (pretend I’m British for a moment, will you?), I can’t help but remember that just two months ago I was on a boat trip in Halong Bay, Vietnam. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy to be here even if a European summer isn’t quite as sunny or warm as I would’ve expected. Regardless, looking back on my three and a half months in Southeast Asia there are more than handful of things that I can’t help but miss. Notably: the sun, especially seeing the sun set nearly every day, almost always dramatically.

I saw the sunset on any number of beaches (not just in Asia, but all over the world) and I’ve probably got hundreds if not thousands of sunset photos that look like just about everyone else’s. But I don’t care; the sunset I saw at Halong Bay on my overnight tour on a boat was truly beautiful. Maybe it was all the cheap beer, or the people I was with, but that was one hell of a good night.

Indochina Sails - “Much more than we expected”

We went on the 2 day, 1 night trip on Halong Bay with Indochina Sails on the premium junk. Our trip was organized as part of a tour of Vietnam so we really didn’t know what to expect, but it was fantastic from start to finish. We were welcomed on board with a cool flannel and drink and after a short talk we went to our rooms. It was lovely, the bed was comfy, air conditioner worked well and the bathroom was well appointed with a great roomy shower. We had a nice little balcony as well and apart from seeing the water everywhere we would not have known that we were on a boat, so for those concerned about sea sickness don’t worry!! Food was plentiful and we had a huge range of all types of Vietnamese and Western foods. We did a couple of little tours on surrounding islands which was also interesting. Congratulations to all of the staff on board, they were very friendly and helpful and also spoke English well. Only thing was we should have booked a longer trip!

Indochina Sails - “Amazing! A Must Do! 2 Nights”

Halong Bay is an absolute must. I have been traveling through South East Asia for a month now and this is by far my favorite spot/attraction. Secondly I have to totally disagree with the last review. I also did the 2 nights cruise and I would suggest that EVERYONE does the 2 night. In my opinion one night would not be enough. We were also lucky in the second day we were the only guests staying the 2 nights and when we transferred to the day boat we had it ALL to ourselves. Yes there is no AC on the boat but there were at least 8 fans going all day inside. During out private second day cruise we didn't see 1 other tourist boat and truly felt that we were all alone in the bay! It was AMAZING! We got to Kayak, swim, cave, visit an oyster farm and have time to read and enjoy the scenery.
Mr. T was the man in charge and was helpful, informative and friendly the entire journey.
The food is AMAZING each day there we had a 6 course lunch and dinner was a buffet that consisted of pork, beef, chicken, squid, mussels and prawns. We were stuffed!

Rooms were comfortable and needless to say the view out you window was amazing!!
Yes this cruise might cost more than others but you get what you pay for and when you see the other boats sailing by you will be very happy you chose Indochina Sails. I for one will be back!

Indochina Sails celebrates International Children's Day

On the occasion of International Children's Day, June 1, 2011, Indochina Sails once again hosted a special party and made a donation to the Primary School of the Cua Van floating fishing village. The village is the largest on Halong Bay with a population of about 600 people. The primary school (floating, of course) comprises three small buildings where about 75 children are taught by 5 teachers.

In addition to organizing a party for the children, gifts including books, pens, school supplies and toys were also donated.

Indochina Sails has a long tradition of making donations of cash and equipment for the school. Last year, prompted by a staff member who asked: “What if we collect some money ourselves and try to fix up the school somehow to make it better for the kids?”, donations from all staff and the management of Indochina Sails were collected and new desks and chairs, along with a large assortment of school supplies were purchased and delivered to the school.

If any guest coming to Ha Long Bay would like to help the young students of the Primary School we suggest you bring donations such as pens, pencils, markers, crayons or chalk. Also, coloring books for the younger students and notebooks for the older ones. And what kid wouldn't like some sweets!

Indochina Sails - The luxury we deserved

We booked the 2 days / 1 night stay on Indochina Sails, deluxe room, 2nd level. Our boat was the 'Indochina Sails Premium', which has only been sailing since Nov 2010, and is very new and luxurious. The rooms (24 rooms) were 5 star hotel rooms essentially, with big rain shower-head, spa bath, private A/C,private balcony (on upper level) and all the trimmings. The dining room, lounge and deck areas were spacious - good for mingling with others or for privacy. The food was great - a good selection at the buffet for lunch on Day 1 & brunch on Day 2. There was a set menu for dinner, Vietnamese and Western cuisine. It was filling and delicious. The staffs on the boat were super-friendly and very accommodating for any requests; they really tried to keep everyone entertained if you wanted it that way (Tai Chi, food carving demos). We also took advantage of the on-board massage therapist (extra cost), to keep up the pampering.

The trip itself was great. The boat sailed smoothly around Halong Bay with stops at Titop Island for spectacular views, a fishing village (which was a highlight) and the following morning we explored Surprise cave.

It was a fantastic trip with Indochina Sails - definitely not cheap, but if you are looking to spoil yourself and do it in grand style, this is without doubt the way to go! Transfers by minibus from Hanoi were included - it is a bit of a scary trip, but that is just Vietnam I'm afraid!

Halong Bay is spectacular and this trip was a fantastic way to see it! Our only regret was that we didn't book the 3 days / 2 nights instead.

I experienced the beauty of Halong Bay through the material and narrative pictures of everyone. How poetry, the music soothing, so much the fine words in favor of dedicated people for this place that I have long cherished once came to discover beauty where history’s “wonders land between the sky “is.

By last summer, I was conditioned to organize a family trip, resort in Ha Long Bay.AlthoughHalong is a known famous landscapes of our country, is the ideal destination attachment legs millions of domestic and foreign tourists every year, but when it actually felt amazing scenery here, I not surprised by the beauty from the elves that the Creator has bestowed favor of this land.

After the trip, not only me but everyone in the family shared an extremely interesting experience. Halong is a masterpiece of nature. Pick up early dawn on the bay, I like walking into a dreamy fairytale thought only capital in the fairy tale “type Cu rural agricultural waste pressing trans / Pants ancient mural painting flags to heaven” (Hundred vast river flowing around the mountain / islands scattered like a chessboard, instant ocean sky blue color. King Le Thanh Tong).

Land, air, water colors blend into each other like. Equivocal light of dawn, after waking up from a mix of forest islands, the gentle morning light beam is projected into the water paint a charming picture painted marine poetical. Released into natural, clear soul, purity of the morning, all tired of the chaos of daily life such as evaporated. A peaceful feeling, how relaxed …

Especially when sitting on the boat began a journey to explore the Gulf Islands, I experienced a lot of sense, going from surprise to surprise the other. Real world, but like dreams, the scene of that lost in the first place Penglai scene. Stitched together a jungle island with the shape transformation immeasurable beauty to the magic. In your exploration of Halong Bay this time, I also have the opportunity to Cua Van fishing village located at Hung Thang Commune, Halong City. Every step I have been fascinated by the beauty of a pristine fishing village with fishermen simple and frank, friendly. In the context of peace, the lives of the fishermen here still occur in association with the peaceful image of the boats …

I not only visit and explore the cultural life of Cua Van fishing village but has also been directly involved in the operation of net and fishing with the fishermen.Strenuous and difficult than I thought a lot. But looking at the shrimp, fish, fresh crab …, the result of a process with the fishing practice, feel the hard work of the Gulf fishermen, really very interesting, compelling and meaningful …

Sightseeing tours, family resort in Ha Long Bay was this really gave me a lot also emotions and exciting experience. Divine beauty hidden in each scene where it leaves me no steps, which sit inside the car full of attachment. There are many interesting sights on the Gulf but in the short time conditions do not have the conditions discovered.

Hope that one day the closest I have chance to come back Ha Long, to continue to discover the beauty hidden in the thousands of islands …, be immersed in the beautiful space that delicate hands of the Creator skillfully artifacts for this place.Ha Long Bay is a unique masterpiece, unique nature.

A 'Junk' Trip in Vietnam ( Halong Bay)

I hunkered in the doorway of an office building as gray clouds moved in, threatening to break open above me. Piles of luggage were stacked in the doorway, but I held tightly to my backpack. As a solo traveler making my way through Vietnam, I had yet to let someone else touch my bag, the essence of my livelihood halfway around the world.

Earlier that morning I had taken a hired car from Hanoi to the coast of Vietnam. This part of the country, known as Halong Bay, was rumored to be tacky and touristy, so I opted instead to head straight for the water.

In fact, most travelers come to Halong Bay for one thing: To tour the bay by junk. These pirate-looking ships generally hold anywhere from a single couple to several dozen people, depending on the boat and tour operator.

Of the nearly 2,000 islands in Halong Bay, only about 300 of them have names. These sheer-faced rocks, covered with luscious trees and foliage, rise out of nowhere in the sea. Apparently birds, snakes, and monkeys live on them, but I can’t imagine that much else does.

As the junk floated among the islands, I sat on the top deck; my legs dangling over the edge of the boat, watching the world recede behind us. The warm, humid air sat heavy on my shoulders, and the dark green of the islands reflected onto the rough surface of the water despite the overcast sky. I felt like we were cruising through a waterlogged version of Jurassic Park.

We piled into the day cruiser that was pulled alongside the junket. One of the boat hands steered the craft toward Công Ðâm. The village “chief” greeted us, poured lukewarm tea into a set of chipped mugs and answered our questions about his home. This, the second largest fishing village in the bay, is only inhabited by 163 people.

As we floated in boats paddled by women in the village, I watched daily life on the water. Dogs lounged on the porches; wet clothes hung from the eves above makeshift porches that surrounded colorful homes sitting atop big plastic barrels.

Despite rain, we set out in kayaks the next morning. I’d been kayaking in calm, clear waters before, but the rough conditions and inclement weather made the paddling tough, despite the fact that I was sharing a boat with Ahn, our guide, who kayaked several times a week.

He muscled our boat between the outcroppings as I feigned my attempt to help power the boat. Several times we stopped the kayak, rain pouring down, waiting for the others to catch up.

The next morning, our final day in the bay, I awoke to a bright sun and clear sky. The emerald foliage of the outcroppings was painted a surprising shade of brilliant green, which reflected in the water like a flat mirror.

We hopped in the kayaks and paddled to a small island with a large cave. The opening on the island was heavily trafficked.

And so we moved through the cave, trying to guess Ahn’s made-up formations quickly so we could get back in the sun.

I was in Halong Bay during the rainy season, it fortunately didn’t rain but there was a lot of fog and the sun hid on and off behind the passing clouds. I don’t particularly recommend March as the best time to visit. It wasn’t cold, but it wasn´t warm enough to make you want to jump into the cold water. I reckon April would be a better month: no clouds, no fog; plus, when the sun shines and illuminates the Bay, it comes to glow in its entire colorful splendor.

Most visitors visit the area hiring tour operators that take them from Hanoi to Halong City Harbor, where you step into a fairly small cruise with 8 to 10 cabins where you can visit the Bay, the islands and the fishing floating stations, apart from sleeping and eating in the boat. Because the cruises remain low density and the group of people with which you travel is small, the experience, all though quite touristy, is very pleasant. I reserved my boat trip in the hotel I was staying in Hanoi and the service was very good. I had a cozy little cabin with a queen size bed and private bathroom in a wooden double decker old fashioned boat, with a windowed dining room from which you could appreciate the view and a deck to enjoy the fresh air; just perfect.

The boat tour will probably take you to the most visited grotto in Halong Bay, a massive cave formation on top of one of the mountain-islands. It is a cave complexly sculpted by the forces of nature. The ceiling, walls and floor are covered in stalactites, stalagmites and all sorts of strange formations. Aesthetic value of Halong Bay Vietnam

Ha Long Bay is a wonderful artistic work of Nature, a harmonious mixture of sculpture and painting, with huge strength and romantic grace. It is not a still life. Instead, its appearance and color change with the times and create unusual images when looked at from different angles, very attractive to visitors. Former Prime Minister Pham Van Dong visiting Ha Long Bay once remarked: "Is this a landscape or a painting? Is it a world landscape or from another unreal world?" (Excerpt from his work entitled "Our Fatherland, Our People, Our Cause and the Artist")

Ha Long is Vietnam's unique sea area where thousands of islands in various strange forms stand, all making a beautiful carpet sparkling like blue gems. The islands crisscross each other, stretching over dozens of kilometers, and like a firm wall preventing in-shore and offshore waters meeting. In some places, the islands are separated, rising tall and jagged. The islands in Ha Long Bay are not monotonous and dreary but constitute a lively world of images of mysterious living beings: an old fisherman (La Vong Island), a praying monk (Ong Su), a pair of fighting cocks (Ga Choi), an eagle looking for food (Dai Bang), etc. It seems that each island has its own soul, like that of a human being.

When cruising Ha Long Bay, passing thousands of big and small stone islands of various forms, one has an impression of being in a world of creatures that were turned to stone millions of years ago. Look at the foot of the stone islands close to the water surface! The sea has carved delicate and strange figures with many strata and layers sewn as bas-relief similar to the stone columns of temples. Through millions of years, the carved designs on the island deepened, making the island's worn and thin compared to the huge island, giving the island peculiar, yet funny shape. Seeing it, the visitors may think that the island can easily fall down if a heavy wind passes through. Among this strange natural sculptural world are marvelous and huge architectural works created by Nature. Some islands are in the shapes of enormous cubes, black and smooth as if they were made of well-cut ironwood like the Mai Nha (House Roof) island. Another is curved like an elephant tusk which becomes smaller and sharper as it soars further into the sky (Nga Voi or Elephant Tusk). Others are created by square stone blocks piled one upon each other, making them much unfixed, yet very steady throughout millions of years of existence (Xep Island). Another island looks like a citadel, facing the sea (Phao Dai Island), etc. On the islands, the vegetation is of a dwarf species with small green leaves which becomes longer at higher attitudes like "tufts of hair" (in the poem "Van Don" by Nguyen Trai - ).

It is truly fascinating to cruise Ba Long Bay by sailing a boat which can go deeper into the forest of islands helping visitors admire different corners of the mysterious clusters of islands. From Bai Chay, the boat will carry visitors across Hon Gai bay towards the southern and southeastern islands. From afar, the islands appear to be a solid wall separating the seas from the waters near the coast, marking the horizon. When the boat comes closer, the wall suddenly breaks and a multitude of sea lanes opens to the visitor's eyes, winding and passing through the wall.

Behind the wall there may appear a blue sky with clouds hanging over, or a vast sea with brown or violet sailing boats. Visitors are impressed by the unique and attractive scenery. Sometimes, while sailing forward, a line of islands suddenly stands in front of the boat, making the sailor confused as he may think that he is heading for a deep-end. However, when the boat comes close to the island, there is room to pass and an unexpected path appears, leading the boat to another forest of islands. The tour is like a game, and impresses the visitors. In 1968, a Chinese tourist, Pan Ting Kouei, after enjoying a tour on Ha Long Bay, exclaimed: "It's fantastic! In the distance, it looks like something quiet familiar. But when we come closer it is no longer the same and disappeared. Things we see in front of us are completely different if we turn to another side and they even disappear.

An early morning in spring on Ha Long is magical. In the vast silvery screen of mist, the islands rise high and low with dark blue mountain tops which appear, then disappear. The coarse, strong, rugged stone mountains become soft and flexible as if they were painted with a quill. Together with the southeast wind and swimming in summer, sunrise on Ha Long Bay is beautiful. At dawn, the glare becomes extremely bright, rising overhead, lighting the sky full of colors. Far away, on the top of the Bai Tho (Poem) mount in the southeast, the small diamond of Venus has not yet disappeared. Amid the azure, violet sea blocks of limestone merge in extraordinary shapes of different colors: emerald blue, red brown and yellow. This is when the sea plays the deep blue and salty string of its musical instrument, companied by the melodious wind and waves.

In the afternoon, the sunshine over the water surface ripples with silvery gentle waves. The stone mountains line up, showing their bare breasts. Here and there, tufts of orchids grown on cliffs with their yellow, soft white and violet blossoming, emitting a sweet fragrance in the healthy atmosphere of the sea. In the evening, when the islands turn from blue to dark violet, there remains only the blazing red sun moving slowly to the west and disappearing behind the row of islands, casting a golden glow on the sky-line. This is the moment when Bai Chay beach has a bustling life "filled with music" ("Being Awaken in a Stormy night" by poet Huy Can).

In the autumn moonlit nights, visitors will find out a dazzling beautiful and mysterious Ha Long. The quiet surface of the Bay looks like a mirror reflecting the silvery moonlight like mercury. At moonrise or moonset, the islands appear in a half-light, half-dark scenes amid the sounds of the wind and waves. The islands, so familiar in daytime become alien and mysterious at night. The aesthetic value of Ha Long Bay does not only lie in the shape of mountains and the color of the sky, but is also hidden in its grottoes. Dozens of grottoes of diverse and rich colors scale and shapes have been found inside the mountains, mostly in the World Heritage area. The most fascinating grotto is Thien Cung (Heaven's Palace). To visit it, one must climb a steep slope, crawl under climbing liana, amidst the scent of orchids and the sound of singing birds. Visitors can enjoy mountain climbing and the enthusiasm of being on the road to Heaven.

Thien Cung is rectangular, about 25m wide, 250m long and 20m high, lying on a north south axis. From its opening to its interior, the visitor has an impression of a spacious and broad cave. The deeper inside, the more surprising and impressing is the wonder of Nature. On the two opposite eastern and western walls are two giant bas-reliefs representing men and animals carved with gracious designs like a flying silk scarf. Some sculptures are huge, rough or smooth to the touch, and the cutting is clear and neat. Here are representations of a kneeling elephant, a galloping horse or a playing tiger. Others are soldiers in war uniforms on cuirassed horses holding swords and shields. Looking up to the ceiling in the east, we are amazed by the living figures of the Heavenly world: the Jade Emperor, the Thunder God, the Nam Tao God, the Bac Dau God with their beards and hair floating like clouds. There are also beautiful fairies in gorgeous cloths, absorbed in their dancing and singing. Stuck to the ceiling is the magical stick of Suen- Wu-Kong (Monkey King) who troubled the Heavenly Court. The 2m-long circular stick sometimes emits light with one end leaning on a stalactite in the middle of the grotto ceiling and the other end on the eastern wall. Each wall of the grotto is a wonder and each grotto compartment is a sculptural masterpiece. Under the high and broad vault, the blue light of the stalactites and stalagmites make them seem silver plated. Standing in this world of strange shapes, both real and unreal, we feel lost in the mysterious and overwhelming Heavenly Palace.

Unlike the Thien Cung palace with an entrance opening at the middle of the mountain, Ba Ham Lake has its bottom at the water surface and is in the centre of Dau Be Island adjacent to the immense Long Chau sea area. Its semi-circular entrance opens in a flat rocky wall in the north west of the island. At its bottom is the water surface linked to the sea Cutlets from Cua Van. Ba Ham Lake is a network of three circular sea depressions with three abrupt cliffs opening to each other through a winding narrow cave. Tourists to Ba Ham Lake have to go by small sampans rowing through the cave, gradually advancing across a forest of stalagmites with various forms and brilliant colors. In an extremely calm space, there is a lively collection of fish, shrimp and crab swimming in the blue water or climbing on the rocky walls. Crossing the cave, the sampan rows on the circular sea depression like on a profound gigantesque pond. Orchids and evergreen plants growing on rocky walls give refuge to butterflies and bats. A carambola tree full of flowers grows at the cave entrance and is a bustling get together for flying squirrels, red buttock monkeys, silver-headed parrots and blue-eyed birds.

Halong Bay - Stunning, serene, must see!

The highlight of the trip was a visit to Ha Long Bay. I chose Indochina Cruises, as though more expensive, apparently gave a better itinerary It was absolutely amazing. A bus picks you up from the hotel around 8am and then expect a 4 hour drive to the port. The bus is air conditioned and not too cramped. A short stop is made about half way through the journey and you are welcomed aboard with a bottle of water. I booked a whole cabin because otherwise you will end up sharing with someone at random if you are a solo traveler. The cabins are small but very comfortable. The Indochina boats are very new and the one I was on only had 5 cabins ( Valentine Cruise). The crew and guide were great - good food and luckily good company in the other guests, but all this is surpassed by the absolutely amazing scenery and beautiful vistas. Ha Long Bay is a busy port with many boats zig zagging around, but the Indochina cruises have a slightly different sailing route which means you do not meet up with many other boats on the way.

Stunning Halong Beauty

The first stop were the limestone caves, expect a climb of about 300 steps (cobbled and some quite difficult to navigate) to reach the top of the cave (the caves are up not down!). Inside the caves are amazing stalactites and stalagmites. it is cooler in the caves, but certainly not cold. The overnight stop is another two hours sailing away, and it was very calm sailing and so very peaceful, especially compared to the hub-bub of Hanoi. In the morning the sunrise is worth waking early for (at this time of year around 615am). The sunset was quite spectacular too, but blink you will miss it! The second day includes a visit to a fish farm. Another reason to recommend Indochina cruises( Indochina Sails) is because they are helping the farms to become more environmentally friendly and sustainable.

Floating School at Cua Van

The second morning breakfast is served at 7.15am and "lunch" at 10.45am. You do need it by then! The journey back to the pier takes another hour or so and you may have to wait an hour for the bus to pick you up and drive back to Hanoi.

ACTIVETRAVEL ASIA would like to give out some advices about how to travel safely and enjoyably in Halong Bay. There are some something you should concern about as you plan your trip there.

1. Overnight junk (vessel) or hotel?

When you travel you can stay in hotel anywhere, anytime and that is just so normal. If you want to have a unique travel experience in Halong Bay it worth spending a night aboard of an overnight vessel amongst thousands of islands and islets. Though the recently tragedy incident happened to an overnight vessel I still vote for it. The question now is how to minimize the risk.

2. How to choose a reliable overnight vessel?

Stick to popular names like Indochina Sails, Huong Hai Junk, Bai Tho Junk, Hai Long Junk,… there are many boat fleets recommended or not recommended on Trip Advisor by travelers. We all know that the big brand is likely a guarantee for the quality. In this case, it is so true. A wooden vessel of a big fleet after some year in operation would be sold to smaller fleet who is targeting at cheap services. These old wooden vessels are not reliable especially in bad weather.

When you book overnight vessel ask your travel consultant or reservation license of the vessel for doing its business. That can tell a lot how reliable your overnight vessel is.

3. What else a popular big vessel fleet can offer?

Their crew are better trained and more discipline. They concentrate on what they do better than crew of a small and unorganized fleet. The vessels are well maintained and safety equipments aboard are better equipped. There are many more things about quality and safety that a small and cheap fleet can not offer traveler since they just target at cheap services.

4. Already aboard, what you should concern?

There should be a hummer in your cabin which can be used to break the glass window in case of emergency. The hummer should be hang right on either sides of the window and you have locate it so you can have it when you need (hope not). If you do not find the hummer you should ask for one from the crew or you make something yourself for that purpose.

There should also be life-vest in your cabin. You have to be sure that you have them ready in case.

Scan the whole vessel for emergency escape way, fire extinguisher,… that would be useful in case of emergency

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MoCST) sent an official document to Việt Nam's representative bodies in oversea about the campaign to vote for Halong Bay as a new world's natural wonder.

Accordingly, during the final voting stage, Hạ Long Bay has continously been among destinations earning highest voting rate.

Thus, the MoCST proposed the Việt Nam's representative bodies, Embassies, media agencies, economic and cultural organisations, pupils and students associations and Vietnamese communities in oversea to put active effort into promotion of Hạ Long Bay, calling for international votes.

Furthermore, The MoCST also sent to these bodies many pictures, documents of Hạ Long Bay as well as instruction for voting steps.

The final voting result will be informed in November 2011.

Hạ Long Bay (Bay of the Descending Dragon), around 165 km from Hà Nội, covers more than 1,550 sq.km with 1,969 islands, including a protected area covering more than 430 sq.km dotted with 755 limestone and schist islands believed to be between 250 and 280 million years old. The lunar calendar shows that Tet is coming, and from now until then, all things are Tet. The streets are Tet, the talk is Tet, the thoughts are Tet, the shopping is Tet, it's a Tet world in Vietnam right now and everybody knows it.

Tet is the most cherished time of the year in Vietnam. It is when the cities empty out and thousands go back to the countryside where they were born. City dwellers often choose to spend time at home. The streets empty out. The horns quiet, the traffic no longer congests and the hustle and bustle of city life, for a few days every year, comes to a halt.

Tet Holiday in Vietnam

As Vietnam develops and its expat population grows, the holiday has also come to hold a special meaning with foreigners as well.

"For me, Christmas was always the big holiday but now, Christmas is just a sign that Tet is approaching," shared Karen Merlin who has lived in Hanoi for over 4 years now. "It's hands down the best time of year, it is a time to catch your breath, relax and reflect on the last year."

Hitting the streets, Tet for foreigners residing in Vietnam means various things. For Stephen McGrath, living in Ho Chi Minh City, "Tet is a cultural event that perplexes and entertains me, but no-one ever knows when it is until a week beforehand," he said jokingly.

Paula, a long-time ESL teacher in Vietnam said for her, "Tet is the one true break I get all year. I cherish every moment and usually spend half in the city with my Vietnamese friends and half traveling somewhere outside of Hanoi."

As vendors try to stock up and sell as much as they can, many foreigners make plans to travel and get as far away as they can.

"I get as far out of the city as possible. It's the one time every year that I don't want to be in the city, I want to be out and traveling. It's so quiet it is lonely so I always grab a bag and hit the road. For me, Tet is my only chance for a big trip every year, so I take it," shared NGO worker Jason.

Adam, who is married to a Vietnamese woman said, "Tet is obviously a very important holiday. It's family time. We do all the traditional activities and it has been a remarkable cultural experience for me. Local food, local people, local everything. We go out to the countryside and celebrate with a huge and loving family."

One resident of Hanoi for over 15 years griped, "As much as I love Tet, it is also the time of year where for two months, the price of anything and everything goes up. From a business standpoint, Tet is terrible but once the day arrives, and my wife's family gathers, I realize that I love it. It's really my Christmas now."

For the plethora of teachers living and working in Vietnam, many refer to it simply as, "Tet is for travel."

Tet's meaning can also change drastically as it did for Eric Burdette, "My first four Tet's used to mean time off for continuous partying... However, over the past two years I have courted (and recently married) a Vietnamese woman. Now that I have a family in Vietnam, Tet has a completely different meaning. After over five years of living in Vietnam, being accepted into a family and having a real home during Tet makes me feel like I truly belong here."

Vietnam’s world heritage Ha Long Bay in the northern province of Quang Ninh ranks sixth among the world’s top ten destinations for sailing cruises by the US’s National Geographic book Journeys of a Lifetime.

The book wrote “Ha Long Bay, or the Bay of the Descending Dragon, in northeastern Vietnam, is scattered with some 3,000 precipitous, strangely sculpted limestone islands and outcrops, and dotted with small floating villages and deserted sandy beaches.

“In spring and early summer the water is particularly calm and clear. This UNESCO World Heritage site is best explored by a cruise on a junk.”

Photo exhibition of Ha Long beauty

A photo exhibition in Ha Long City displays 130 candid photos taken from aerial and ground level of Ha Long Bay, a natural world wonder.

Young photographer Do Khanh Giang took many risks to take these photos, which were selected from more than 1,500 photographs taken by him over the past three years.

Many visitors to the exhibition of his photos, which started on November 2, said the artistic works have introduced a new, splendid and intact Ha Long Bay.
